Yr 6 shelter box
On Monday 6th January 2014 year 6 had special visitor called Shirley, from the Shelter Box Organisation.
Year 6 have been learning about shelters which have been destroyed by natural disasters like, ‘Hurricanes, Earthquakes, Volcanic eruptions, Conflicts, Floods and Tsunamis’ Much of the world, has experienced some of these tragedies.
The guest, who told us that nearly 55/56 items are provided in a Shelter Box: immense tent, thermal blankets and insulated ground sheets, children packs, patterned mosquito nets, a basic tool kit – hammer, axe, saw, pliers, hoe head, trenching shovel, rope, cooking pans, utensils, bowls and mugs and lots more…
Shirley, who told us that the tents have been built with mosquito screens, integral groundsheets, good ventilation, and internal privacy screens. The tents were first designed by China and Scotland! She also mentioned that these tents are given to people around the world if their homes were demolished from a catastrophe.
Most of the people who work for Shelter box are volunteers, which means that they help others selflessly, and do this by way of donations from other kind-hearted souls.
The fact that surprised me the most was that that it costs £500.90 to equip just one box because they have to buy the equipment.
