Year 5 and 6 ‘Growing Against Violence' Workshops

This year, pupils in Years 5 and 6 welcomed Growing Against Violence back to school for two engaging and thought-provoking workshops. These sessions form an important part of our PSHE provision, giving children the opportunity to explore situations they may encounter as they grow older and equipping them with the knowledge and confidence to make safe and informed choices.

Year 5 – ‘So Social Media’

Year 5 explored the increasingly important topic of social media and online safety through the ‘So Social Media’ workshop. Pupils were encouraged to think carefully about how they use phones, games and social media and to consider the difference between genuine friendships and connections made online. The children discussed a range of online risks, including cyberbullying, inappropriate content and grooming, while also considering how gaming and social media can affect their experiences and relationships. Importantly, they explored what they can do if something online makes them feel worried or uncomfortable and identified trusted people and sources of support they can turn to for help.

Year 6 – ‘Friend versus Friendlies’

Year 6 took part in ‘Friend versus Friendlies’, a workshop designed to help pupils recognise the difference between a genuine friend and someone who may appear friendly because they want something in return. The session introduced pupils to the topic of gangs, exploring what gangs may appear to offer young people and some of the tactics they can use to influence or recruit others. Through discussion and role-play, the children considered how manipulation can take place and practised recognising warning signs and responding safely. Both workshops provided valuable opportunities for pupils to ask questions, share their ideas and develop practical strategies for keeping themselves and others safe. We are grateful to Growing Against Violence for another engaging and informative set of sessions for our pupils.
