St.Stephen's School

Year 3 Roman Shield Making Workshop

In Year 3 we have been learning all about the Romans in our Creative Curriculum topic of adventure. We decided that to be real romans we had to experience life as a Roman soldier, and to make this happen we of course would need shields!

We spent a whole week of topic lessons, designing, planning and testing to decide on what we would like our shields to be like. Then we invited parents into school to help us in the final stage of the process - the making!
We used a cardboard base, making sure we had a handle on the back, and decorated in different ways using strong, bold colours.

We then went outside to form a testudo (tortoise) formation to see if we would be protected from attack. Luckily for us there aren't any invading armies around St Stephen's, but we will be prepared if there are!
