Year 1's Healthy Smiles

Over the past few weeks, our Year 1 pupils have been diving into the world of dental hygiene, exploring the importance of brushing their teeth and maintaining a healthy smile!

As part of our science learning about health, the Year 1 children have been brushing their teeth at school every day. With the guidance of teachers and support staff, they have learned the proper technique for brushing, the importance of brushing for two minutes, and the significance of using fluoride toothpaste. The children have embraced this routine with great enthusiasm and have shown remarkable progress in their dental hygiene skills.

To reinforce the importance of maintaining healthy oral habits, we have provided each child with their very own toothbrush to take home. We encourage you to continue supporting your child's dental care by reminding them to brush their teeth twice a day – once in the morning and once before bed – just like they have been doing at school. Remember to supervise them during brushing until they develop the confidence to do it independently!

Here are a few key points to keep in mind when helping your child with their dental hygiene routine:

  1. Brushing Technique: Teach your child to use a gentle circular motion while brushing, making sure to cover all tooth surfaces, including the front and back.
  2. Two Minutes Rule: Encourage your child to brush for a full two minutes. You can make it more enjoyable by using a timer or playing their favourite song to make it a fun and engaging activity.
  3. Fluoride Toothpaste: Ensure your child is using a toothpaste with fluoride, as it helps prevent tooth decay and strengthens tooth enamel. Remember, a pea-sized amount is all they need!
  4. Regular Dental Check-ups: Don't forget to schedule regular dental check-ups for your child. The dentist will ensure their teeth and gums are healthy, offer guidance on proper dental care, and address any concerns you may have.

By working together, we can instil the importance of dental hygiene in our children's lives and set them on the path to a lifetime of healthy smiles!
