World Book Day 2025
Celebrating World Book Day and International Women's Day at St Stephen’s!
On Thursday, 6th March 2025, we celebrated both World Book Day and International Women’s Day with a special focus on inspiring women from history. Our learning for the day was centered around the book Goodnight Stories for Rebel Girls, a collection of tales about extraordinary women who defied the odds and made their mark on the world. The children were invited to come to school dressed in green, white and purple: the colours of the Suffragette movement.
Each class embarked on a journey of discovery, exploring the life of an inspiring woman— from the book linked to their curriculum topics. Pupils researched their chosen 'Rebel Girl' and then created their own storybooks, writing the woman’s life in the style of a fairytale, just like the ones in Goodnight Stories for Rebel Girls. These stories began with "Once upon a time…" and included personal quotes, emotions, and key moments of determination, strength, and courage.
Here are the inspirational women that each year group focused on:
- Year 1: Wangari Maathai (Kenyan Conservationist)
- Year 2: Boudicca (Roman Warrior Queen)
- Year 3: Cleopatra (Ancient Egyptian Queen)
- Year 4: Simone Biles (American Olympian/Gymnast)
- Year 5: Noor Inayat Khan (World War II Spy)
- Year 6: Helen Brooke Taussig (Pioneer of Pediatric Cardiology)
Our children had a wonderful time learning about these remarkable women!

Year 1 planted some seeds, in honour of Wangari Maathai who planted seeds throughout Kenya!
