Music For Youth Festival

children arriving at the festivalOn Tuesday 2nd July, the St Stephen's Sambistas travelled to the national Music for Youth festival in Birmingham. It was a long journey but we arrived in time to perform to a packed audience at the Adrian Boult Hall at the Birmingham Conservatoire. One of the judges, Leonora Davies CBE, commented on Maria's "delightful" introduction, and praised our "really good tight rhythmic control", they way we listened to one another, and our "real sense of performance".

As well as performing, we heard children from Huddersfield playing Japanese taiko drums. They were amazing! We had a look round Birmingham Symphony Hall, one of the best concert halls in Europe. We also took part in a workshop celebrating the centenary of composer Benjamin Britten. Maya got to play on the marimba, a really big xylophone.

children performing on stageThis year the samba club visited Langdon School to take part in the Music for Youth festival. The judges thought we were fantastic and therefore we were invited to perform in the Music for Youth final in Birmingham. It took us ages to get there, but it was worth it. We performed in front of real judges. We got remarkable comments from the judges and we also got certificate. We returned home after a workshop about the composer Benjamin Britten. Everyone was proud of us and so were we!
