Archaeology Week
At St Stephen's there are many changes happening currently with the expansion, and it made us think about the history of our school and its surroundings. To investigate further, we held an Archaeology Week where we aimed to discover more about the history of our area and what it was like to live here.
The whole school had an opportunity to dig in a trench in part of the school grounds, hoping to find objects and clues that would tell us about the history of St Stephen's. To do this we had to use special tools and record our finds accurately, just like real archaeologists would. We found many different objects, ranging from coins and broken pottery to photo frames and silver spoons. We were all amazed at what we found!
We then had the opportunity to use Census information to discover the inhabitants of the streets surrounding St Stephen's from as far back as 1911, and we used the Newham Story to find out the key events that had changed our local area.
