St.Stephen's School

Swimming

Swimming is an important life skill that supports health, fitness, and water safety.

In line with the National Curriculum, St. Stephen’s provides swimming lessons for pupils in Year 4, delivered by qualified instructors.

Pupils are taught to swim competently, confidently, and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres, use a range of strokes (including front crawl, backstroke, and breaststroke), and perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.

Lessons focus on building water confidence, improving technique, and developing an understanding of personal safety. Progress is monitored to ensure pupils are supported in achieving the expected standard by the end of the programme.
